The Yoneshiro-gawa River was a main
transportation route in this region for a long time. Consequently, the river
affected every aspect of local people's life - its society, economy, information
and culture. Several ports in Futatsui prospered as shipping bases. Various
kinds of supplies transported from the Kansai region, in and around Osaka,
were brought on sailing ships from Noshiro, then were transshipped to smaller
boats at Futatsui and sent to the upper region. For return cargoes, cedar
and minerals such as copper and silver were shipped down on boats.
