雄物川The Omono-gawa River

　仙北平野のシンボル的存在は、何といっても雄物川であろう。秋田県南部・雄物沢より発する全長１３３キロ、流域面積４７１０平方キロの一級河川である。横手盆地の西を北流し、仙北平野神宮寺付近から西流すると出羽山地を横断、秋田平野を経て秋田市より日本海に注ぐ。
　『享保郡邑記』によると、「仙北三郡の貢物（御物成）をば、舟にてつみ下す川なれば、雄物 川と申す」とある。
　１９０５年に奥羽本線が完成するまでは、米、木材（下げ）、塩、魚、鉱山用機械類（上げ）などの物資の輸送路として重要な役目を果たしてきたが、一方では放水路やダムが完成するまで、毎年のように大雨や融雪による洪水に悩まされてきた。現在、平野をゆったりと流れる雄物川は、水が媒体となり「自然と人」「環境と人」とを結びつける親水空間、水縁空間としての役割が期待されている。

　The Omono-gawa River may be thought of as a symbol of the Senboku Plain. This large river runs from the southeastern part of Akita Prefecture, having a total length of 133 km. It flows down westward from around Jinguji in the Senboku Plain, then crosses the Dewa Mountains, and flows into the Sea of Japan at Akita City. The river was often flooded by heavy rains and melting snow, but this was solved by the construction of floodways and dams.
