Attention is being given to one housing
project, while consumption of Japanese lumber has decreased due to the large
volume of imported lumber, and Japanese forests have been devastated because
of a lack of care. They are the Futatsui municipal houses, which were completed
in 1999. The houses are built using Akita cedar from Futatsui with traditional
Japanese construction methods. "Nami-zai", which has knots, is used as the
lumber. "Nami-zai" had been avoided because of its bad appearance, but there
is no problem with its quality. It is expected that the circulation system
of forest can be reborn, devastation of the forests can be prevented, and
the forestry town of Futatsui activated by using such lumbers. Carpenters
who constructed the houses and artisans who made the furniture were all from
Futatsui. The houses receive nationwide attention, and applications to visit
poured in.
